James Beard Nominations 2009The 2009 James Beard Foundation Awards has just released its complete list of nominees. For those unaware of the James Beard Awards, think of it as the Oscars of the restaurant/cooking industry. It's a very big deal, one of the highest honors any cooking professional can receive.

James Beard has been called by many different nicknames: the quintessential American cook, the Dean of American cuisine, the father of gourmet American cooking, etc. His career highlights during the 1950s allowed him to introduce the American public to French gourmet cooking via cookbooks, NBC cooking shows, and his own culinary institute among many other things.

The James Beard Award Foundation aims to recognize unparalleled excellence in the cooking industry. It features dozens of categories, ranging from Rising Star Chef of the Year to Best Restaurant Graphic Design. Topics such as journalism, media, humanitarian involvement, books, and the best regional chefs and restaurateurs all have many sub-categories full of award possibilities.

Just for a sampling, here are the nominees for the Outstanding Chef Award, presented by All-Clad Metalcrafters:

Jose Andres, Minibar, Washington, D.C.

Dan Barber, Blue Hill, New York City

Tom Colicchio, Craft, New York City
