Some pieces in the set may last a lifetime, but others will need replacement in a few years.

With proper care of this set you'll have better luck, since there are some good features here. The cookware has the modern sandwich bottom design which layers a disc of aluminum between two sheets of stainless steel. The aluminum conducts heat evenly over the enter bottom surface. This type of construction requires less power and works best on low to medium burner settings.

Farberware's non-stick coating has some special needs, and the company suggests one and only one type of detergent to clean it. The lifetime of the interior finish of the saute pans will be reduced if that advice is not taken. Dishwashers are also tough on this cookware, and hand washing according to Farberware's instructions will reduce problems.

Handles of these pots and pans are plastic, heat tolerant to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, so technically the set is oven safe. Practically speaking, that's too close to an oven's working temperature for safety, since a reading of 350 on the oven often means a temperature roaming between 325 and 375 degrees.

Cut back a little bit on expectations, and the Farberware will survive the kitchen longer.

Compare this with Cuisinart's stainless steel cookware set.

KitchenAid Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl | Stand Mixer Attachment K45SBWH http://www.thecooksden.com/kitchenaid-stainless-steel-mixing-bowl-stand-mixer-attachment-k45sbwh/ http://www.thecooksden.com/kitchenaid-stainless-steel-mixing-bowl-stand-mixer-attachment-k45sbwh/#comments Sat, 28 Nov 2009 22:49:01 +0000 Alice http://www.thecooksden.com/?p=8613 KitchenAid Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl If you have a KitchenAid stand mixer, one or two of these spare bowls are the best accessory you can buy. How often are we ever mixing a recipe that requires only one bowl? For a cake with icing, separate premix of wet and dry ingredients, double batches, breads or cookies where the recipe is split and different flavorings added... you need an extra bowl to get the job done. Why not choose one which will fit your mixer?

Improvements on the bowl design include a flat bottom to help it sit more solidly on the counter and a well-sized handle for those times when a heavy bowl or wet, slippery hands make maneuvering difficult. If something needs a quick chill, I can pop it right into the refrigerator or freezer. Let your bread rise right in the original bowl and keep yourself from overhandling the dough.

I've tried using a single mixing bowl, only to find each time that the items I need to mix are the ones in the regular bowl. By the time I transfer them, I have made a larger mess, dirtied another bowl, and left ingredients behind each step of the way. With one of these bowls, it works both with the mixer and independently. You won't have to stop midway through and wash your mixing bowl.

Cuisinart Mixing Bowl Set | Stainless Steel 4 Piece http://www.thecooksden.com/cuisinart-mixing-bowl-set-stainless-steel-4-piece/ http://www.thecooksden.com/cuisinart-mixing-bowl-set-stainless-steel-4-piece/#comments Fri, 25 Sep 2009 13:41:31 +0000 Lora http://www.thecooksden.com/?p=7859 Cuisinart Mixing Bowl Set If you're helping someone set up their kitchen, a good place to start is with mixing bowls. Think about it. Where do most recipes start? With mixing, right?

You could go with the one-size-fits-all model. But one-size-fits-all is about as true with mixing bowls as it is with clothes. The perfect egg scrambling bowl is not the same size as the perfect cake batter bowl. Unless, of course, you're scrambling eggs for the entire army but only cooking a cake for the General. And how often does that happen?

Cuisinart's 4-Piece Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl set includes 4 popular sizes: 1 quart, 1.5 quarts, 3 quarts, and 5 quarts. A nice, solid range.

All the mixing bowls in this Cuisinart set are made from professional quality stainless steel. High sides on all four bowls help to reduce spills and splatters during mixing. These high sides, along with the fact that the bowls are dishwasher safe, make for much easier cleanup.

Chocolate cake batter may be fun to lick off the counter, but no one wants to be on KP duty when there's dried egg to be cleaned off the walls.

The bowls are attractive as well, with a brushed finish and a polished edge band. And the set comes with a five-year warranty.

But, after all this, I must confess. I am wrong. All recipes do not start with mixing. They start with ingredients. So if you want to be a very good friend, throw some staple ingredients (or more exotic ones) in with the set of mixing bowls for a more personalized, but still extremely useful, gift.

KitchenAid Mixing Bowl w/ Handle | Stainless Steel Mixer KN2B6PEH http://www.thecooksden.com/kitchenaid-mixing-bowl-w-handle-stainless-steel-mixer-kn2b6peh/ http://www.thecooksden.com/kitchenaid-mixing-bowl-w-handle-stainless-steel-mixer-kn2b6peh/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2009 13:37:19 +0000 Dan http://www.thecooksden.com/?p=7811 KitchenAid Mixing Bowl w/ Handle If you are fortunate enough to own a Kitchenaid mixer, you already know how incredibly useful it is in the kitchen. And the one thing that will increase its usefulness more than anything else is an extra bowl.

There are many recipes that call for mixing ingredients separately before blending, and having to transfer them to and from the lone mixing bowl is not only inconvenient, it can prove disastrous to delicate recipes. Egg whites in particular don't like being moved about too much, the point of mixing being to inject air into the food. Every time you spoon or pour fragile mixtures like that, you lose the volume you just mixed in. The other reason you may want an extra bowl on hand would be for a backup; just think if you had a big baking weekend ahead and your mixing bowl proved defective at the last minute and snapped its anchor rings? Sure, you could contact the company and have the bowl replaced, but that wouldn't happen in time for your baking deadline.

This stainless steel bowl is built to the heavy duty specifications of all the original Kitchenaid components. It has a solid handle riveted onto the side and the mounting holes to fix it into the fittings on the mixer. It is in fact heavier than the standard bowl that comes with the stand mixer; those that use the commercial version will recognize this as the bowl that accompanies their model.

Here's a similar KitchenAid stand mixer bowl without the mounting holes.

OXO Good Grips Mixing Bowl Set | Nonskid 3 Piece Stainless Steel http://www.thecooksden.com/oxo-good-grips-mixing-bowl-set-nonskid-3-piece-stainless-steel/ http://www.thecooksden.com/oxo-good-grips-mixing-bowl-set-nonskid-3-piece-stainless-steel/#comments Sat, 19 Sep 2009 18:05:35 +0000 Alice http://www.thecooksden.com/?p=7688 OXO Good Grips Mixing Bowl Set OXO tends to think of issues in the kitchen in the use of their products that many of us haven't really considered before. The kind of issue you simply find a way to work around without considering it a solvable problem, like when you're working with a traditional mixing bowl and it wants to go skidding across the counter. OXO addressed this by providing nonskid bottoms. They've also created a fully-rounded interior which makes scraping more efficient and eliminates corners which can trap food. The bowls can nest to save storage space. You can chill or marinate inside them without worrying about a reaction. The bowls are 1.5, 3, and 5-quart sizes. The 5-quart is good for double batches and tossed salads or popcorn. All three are dishwasher safe.

Part of OXO's baking line, these three mixing bowls come with stainless steel interiors and white plastic exteriors which protect your hands from extreme temperatures. In our house, we tend to use mixing bowls for everything from storage to display. We mix in them, but we also call upon them to keep our produce separated and close at hand. A range of sizes means there is always a good match for any job. There are enough containers to properly mix dry and wet ingredients separately before combining them. The high sides prevent splatter and keep tossed ingredients contained.

And you might need a new whisk as well.

Did you know they can actually trace the roots of the present company all the way back to Paul Revere himself? That's some American manufacturing history.

Anyone who has spent time in the kitchen mixing up ingredients for baking and such will appreciate a set of stainless steel bowls like these. Revere sells these as a set of three, and also provides fitted plastic lids to keep the contents fresh if you are called away in the middle of whipping something up and get a phone call, or simply desire using these for storage in the refrigerator.

They are well shaped for using with an electric mixer, and the size range makes them useful for a variety of tasks. The set is rather on the small size, so if you plan on making really large recipes, you'll have to purchase a larger mixing bowl separately to augment this set. Although the base is flat and stable, a good idea is to fold a damp dishcloth and place under the bowl when mixing to keep it from moving around on the counter.

One additional handy feature is the hanging loop on the side of the bowls. While I wouldn't hang these up purely for sanitary reasons, they would look smart hanging next to your other stainless steel cookware. That would keep them in easy reach however. Since they nest inside each other neatly, I'll just keep them in the cupboard.

All-Clad Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl Set of 3 | Kitchen Baking Bowls, 1.5 To 5 Quart http://www.thecooksden.com/all-clad-mixing-bowl-set-kitchen-baking-stainless-steel-3-piece/ http://www.thecooksden.com/all-clad-mixing-bowl-set-kitchen-baking-stainless-steel-3-piece/#comments Fri, 27 Feb 2009 05:14:24 +0000 Dan http://www.thecooksden.com/all-clad-mixing-bowl-set-kitchen-baking-stainless-steel-3-piece/ All-Clad Mixing Bowl Set Wow. Whether you say that in response to the steep price of this set of bowls, or the polished perfection they represent, you will be impressed with the quality from All-Clad.

The All-Clad company makes cookware for professionals and those seeking the same professional quality for their kitchens at home. These mixing bowls are manufactured from 18/10 stainless steel. That number signifies the highest corrosion resistance. Good stuff. They are highly polished and suitable for serving as well as mixing recipes. The size range is well suited for the majority of kitchen tasks. All-Clad offers a giant 7-quart mixing bowl separately in a matching style for those REALLY big recipes.

The shape is a nice balance between stability on the counter and roundness for maximum efficiency while mixing or whipping ingredients. These bowls are extra wide for easy stirring and spatula friendly for pouring out into your baking pans. The coolest feature is the large stable side handle. This really increases the usability of these from just any old mixing bowl into world class status. The shape of the handle allows not just a steady grip on the counter but an easy way to pour one-handed. They do really need a feature to stand out from the pack at the high price they command, and the handle sets them apart from the others on the market.

Of course these are dishwasher safe. I wouldn't want to scratch these up with a scouring pad so if you get something dried and hard to remove, just soak them in hot soapy water until it comes off easily. All-Clad provides a lifetime warranty against defects on these and all their cookware.

OXO SoftWorks Kitchen Plastic Mixing Bowl Set 3 Piece http://www.thecooksden.com/oxo-softworks-kitchen-plastic-mixing-bowl-set-3-piece/ http://www.thecooksden.com/oxo-softworks-kitchen-plastic-mixing-bowl-set-3-piece/#comments Sun, 22 Feb 2009 01:13:09 +0000 Dan http://www.thecooksden.com/oxo-softworks-kitchen-plastic-mixing-bowl-set-3-piece/ OXO SoftWorks Kitchen Plastic MixingThese bowls from OXO SoftWorks are so smartly designed that after using them you begin to wish that every tool in your kitchen had a cool little black rubber handle on it. My first thought was that they looked like something from the kitchen on Star Trek.

We all have a few plastic bowls in the cupboard. They serve the purpose intended, without fanfare. As such, the thought of radically improving the usefulness of the lowly plastic mixing bowl has eluded most manufacturers. Until now...(cue music.)

Okay. In all seriousness, this mixing bowl set has some pretty neat stuff going on. There's the rubber non-skid base to keep the bowl from sliding around your countertop while you, or your little chef making his first batch of cookies, stir up the contents. There's also an extremely useful pour spout, plus that rubber handle is on only one side for easy gripping and maneuvering when the bowl is full of stuff. These are the ideal shapes for blending ingredients with a mixer: a wide bowl with a highly stable base and vertical sides.

There are many advantages to plastic mixing bowls in the kitchen. They're lightweight, more or less unbreakable with normal use, and they will not chemically react with highly acidic foods as metal bowls can. They are easy to clean and dishwasher safe.

A couple things to mention here: these are not microwave safe for heating foods, and the set does not come with lids. The unique handle and spout make it a challenge to cover these for storage so these should not be considered for that purpose. Also, the white color can be stained over time so best to wash these promptly after using them. All in all, these would be a great addition to your spaceship -Er, I mean kitchen.

Pyrex Smart Essentials Kitchen Mixing Bowl Set 8 Piece http://www.thecooksden.com/pyrex-smart-essentials-kitchen-mixing-bowl-set-8-piece/ http://www.thecooksden.com/pyrex-smart-essentials-kitchen-mixing-bowl-set-8-piece/#comments Tue, 17 Feb 2009 17:40:29 +0000 Dan http://www.thecooksden.com/pyrex-smart-essentials-kitchen-mixing-bowl-set-8-piece/ Pyrex Smart Essentials Kitchen MixingPyrex has always been a part of the kitchen for me. I grew up using Corningware bowls (a division of Pyrex) in my mother's house, and acquired a set when I lived in my first apartment via the local thrift store. That speaks as well to the durability of the product. As long as you don't drop these and smash them, they really do last forever.

Now the Pyrex folks have added a useful new twist to an already stellar product. This mixing bowl set comes with fitted lids made from a durable plastic. The bowls themselves come in four practical sizes and nest neatly inside each other for storage. As with all the Pyrex line, these are made from tempered glass. The bowls are suitable for use on the counter, in the oven or microwave, and are freezer safe.

Tempered glass has a few advantages over plastic for use and storage. It doesn't stain or pick up the smells and flavors of food. It is easy to clean due to its very hard non-porous surface, which also keeps it from being easily scratched during normal use. And the look - clear glass - fits in with any kitchen decor.

The lids that accompany this set are colorful, and the bowl size is clearly marked on the top. They stay on thanks to the large "lip" on the bowl's edge. This bowl set and the lids are all dishwasher safe; just don't try to use the bowls on the stovetop. Oven heat is fine but the direct heat of a burner will cause these to shatter. Likewise a rapid temperature change like pouring cold water into a hot bowl can break tempered glass. Just pay close attention to the use and care instructions that accompany these.

If you prefer the stainless steel look, check out this set from Cuisinart.
