My main reservation stems from the fact that it has limited versatility. The attachments Cuisinart offers for its mixers truly add value and extend the usefulness of the machine, but they only work on Cuisinart stand mixers (four of those models).

The reason to own a powered juicer of this type is so that you don't have to manually work the fruit across the reamer. With the power of the mixer behind it, and the sixteen ounces the pitcher can contain, there is the potential to very quickly make a decently sized batch of juice. If I didn't make fresh juice daily or in quantity, I'd be tempted to choose another way, concerned that if I changed models or brands, this juicer would no longer be functional.

One advantage of having a juicer powered by your stand mixer is to save the space and hassle of owning and storing another appliance, but the attachment itself is the size of many electric reamers. I believe it would be better to go with a stand alone option or manual reamer rather than this particular product. Other juicers offer many extra features, such as measure markings, double strainers, funky shapes and colors. High or low tech, they are nearly all more compact and inexpensive than this single attachment.

If you don't have a stand mixer, this electric citrus juicer works just as well.

The attachments are strong and well designed. The bowl shape is just right to help keep ingredients contained and aid in thorough mixing. As long as you work your way up and don't go for the maximum tolerance with your first attempt, I believe you'll be pleased with the performance. The user guide has excellent, helpful tips on food preparation and baking. It is worth a read. The whole machine seems to be well designed, providing ease of use and a number of very nice options.

As long as you don't expect it to be, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Mounting a hand mixer allows it to be balanced to better serve you. This would be a nice option for anyone who might have trouble manipulating a regular hand mixer or holding the bowl and mixer at the same time. The unit has some very nice features, like a beater eject lever, so no pulling is needed. The tilting head makes working with and removing the bowl easy. The user guide contains some quite helpful basics meant to assure you get the best from your mixer and recipes.

At least aesthetically speaking anyway. And if we're talking about looks alone, then I guess all KitchenAid Stand Mixers are what? Mercedes?

The Cuisinart Stand Mixer is very boxy (like an old Volvo). So, if you're used to the graceful lines of a KitchenAid (the Mercedes), then the Cuisinart just looks funny.

In terms of accessories, the two mixers are mostly the same. KitchenAid and Cuisinart both include a whisk, flat paddle, and dough hook with their mixers. The KitchenAid Artisan and the Cuisinart both come with splashguards. All have tilt-back heads and stainless steel bowls.

And here's where things start to differ. Cuisinart offers a 5 1/2 quart bowl with its stand mixers; KitchenAid's is only 5-quarts. Does that 1/2 quart make much difference to you?

The Cuisinart boasts an 800-watt engine while KitchenAid's is only 325 watts. Of course, the KitchenAid Heavy Stand Mixer is a commercial grade mixer at 325 watts, so are all those extra watts going to do anything other than suck more juice? Hard to say.

Cuisinart offers 12 speeds, KitchenAid Artisan offers 10, and KitchenAid's Heavy only has 5. But does more speed settings mean better production? Hard to say.

Finally, perhaps the most significant difference is that the Cuisinart Stand Mixer comes with a 3-year warranty and a 5-year motor warranty, whereas the KitchenAid Artisan mixer only has a 1-year limited replacement warranty.

In the end, since the Cuisinart SM-55BK and the KitchenAid Artisan are almost exactly the same price, the decision may come down to aesthetics. And, in this case, aesthetics are a perfectly good factor to decide by.
