Bread Machines | Automatic Home Bread Makers

Most of us have been eating machine-made bread our whole lives, so the concept of a fresh loaf popping out from a gadget is nothing new. Having that gadget on your kitchen counter, baking fresh hot loaves on demand is a more recent phenomenon.

Bread Machine History & Use

The first automated bread making machine for the home was invented in that gadget loving country Japan, in the 80′s. It wasn’t until the mid 90′s that these devices became popular in the United States. Since then over a dozen manufacturers have entered the market with their versions and the bread machine is constantly being refined and updated with the latest technology.

Bread machines are meant to be very simple and foolproof to use. Just measure and add the ingredients to the loaf pan, close the lid and program the operation desired. The machine mixes and kneads the dough, adds the yeast at the appropriate time, and carefully controls the rising before baking the loaf to your settings. Nowadays, these machines offer a variety of options to the baking experience. Of course you can make a variety of bread styles, including nut and fruit breads. Some can even be used for pizza dough and pasta making, as well as whipping up jams and preserves for topping that homemade bread.

How to Buy a Bread Maker

When you start shopping for a bread maker, you’ll be amazed at the variety. The price varies considerably as well, from less than $50 to over $200. First decide how much you want to spend, and what exactly you desire from the machine. Most bargain machines produce a result that is every bit as good as from the most expensive units. You just get fewer options, programming features, and often less reliability over the long term with the bargain basement bread machines.

Nowadays, there is so much information available its pretty easy to research and narrow down your options before setting out to buy your first bread machine. Gone are the days when you would get a peculiar shaped, poorly mixed loaf from a machine. Among the differences to look for are baking and warmup times, as some machines require a LOT of time to bake a single loaf; programmability, so that you can prepare a batch ahead of time for baking overnight; and perhaps most important- the warranty provided. A quality bread machine will have at least a one year warranty. This indicates that the company is invested with the product sufficiently to back it up should something go wrong.
