The Norwalk initiative started in 1910 by Dr. Walker, who opened Norwalk Laboratories of Health Research to promote juice therapy and the raw foods diet. Today, the concept of juicing is growing in popularity thanks to Dr. Walker's initial research.

The Norwalk 275 is the most recent juicer to be manufactured by the company. It is the 75th anniversary edition and comes in a variety of colors and designs to match the kitchen: all primary colors, black, white, cream, and wood grain. And it's not just a juicer, either. This model also makes nut butters, freshly ground flours and coffee, baby food, chopped salads or slaw, shaved ice, and ice cream.

As far as performance goes, a Norwalk juicer features a hydraulic press system. Compared to other models, it extracts more juice per ounce and leaves out a lot of pulp, especially when compared to centrifugal juicers. Another advantage of this juicing method is that there is much less room for oxidation to occur. The juice is not exposed to as much air. This means juice can be made in bulk and then refrigerated or frozen for days, while only losing a trivial amount of fresh vitamin and enzyme content.

The Norwalk 275 cleans easily. Even though there are 8 different parts to clean, they are made from stainless steel and can either be rinsed under purified water or run through the dishwasher.

However, its powerful motor doesn't make it an ideal choice for juicing leafy greens and wheatgrass. The motor is quite powerful and doesn't spend a lot of time on these delicate foods. The best way to get around this is to add greens along with the fruits and vegetables being juiced. But for purists who want to juice greens alone, a single or twin gear machine will work best.

Another concern is the Norwalk's increased heat output, which can compromise the nutritional and enzymatic contents of the juice. This is due to the juicer's grid screen in the housing that gets clogged over time with food bits. The clogging creates friction, thus creating excess heat. Fortunately, this problem can be maintained with regular cleaning, but it can be a bit of a hassle.

Since it's such an investment, owners can expect the Norwalk to have an extremely long shelf life -- up to 30 years in many cases. But like any long-lasting machine, it needs to be regularly maintained. Otherwise, the parts will cease to function. The motor will need oil, the belts may need replacing, and oil leaks may need to be fixed. Replacement parts can be ordered from the manufacturer easily enough for newer models like the 275, but it's extremely difficult to find parts for older models dating back to the 230-240 series.

After some trial and error with your favorite juicing ingredients, you'll find that leafy greens are best juiced when rotated between other solid fruits and veggies instead of done all at once.

One great thing about this model is the easy clean-up between juicing sessions. If you want to make multiple juices for a lot of people and don't want any residual taste left over, just run a couple glasses of water through it, and the result is as good as new.

For its price, though, you'll want to make sure and treat it with care. The Huron Slow Juicer doesn't come with any spare parts, nor are there any on the market at this point. The most common part that can break is the stainless steel strainer, molded into the machine with plastic that may develop hairline fractures over time. Another investment that you may want to compare the Huron with is the VitaMix line of blenders and juicers.

My main reservation stems from the fact that it has limited versatility. The reason to own a powered juicer of this type is so that you don't have to manually work the fruit across the reamer. With the power of the mixer behind it, and the sixteen ounces the pitcher can contain, there is the potential to very quickly make a decently sized batch of juice. If I didn't make fresh juice daily or in quantity, I'd be tempted to choose another way, concerned that if I changed models or brands, this juicer would no longer be functional.

One advantage of having a juicer powered by your stand mixer is to save the space and hassle of owning and storing another appliance, but the attachment itself is the size of many electric reamers. I believe it would be better to go with a stand alone option or manual reamer rather than this particular product. Other juicers offer many extra features, such as measure markings, double strainers, funky shapes and colors. High or low tech, they are nearly all more compact and inexpensive than this single attachment.

If you don't have a stand mixer, this electric citrus juicer works just as well.
