Sometimes everything goes well. Other times, I wish I had an extra set of hands. That is where the versatility of a hand/stand mixer is a blessing. When my arm gets tired, I can let the mixer sit on the stand to do its work. When I need that extra freedom to manipulate the beaters or get to tough spots (or when I don't feel like pulling out the whole stand), I can use the hand mixer alone.

This Hamilton Beach model features a shift and stir bowl, which makes it easier to add ingredients during mixing. The head of the mixer travels around the bowl as the beaters spin in the opposite direction to give dough and batter a greater level of smoothness. The bowl rest is grooved to both stabilize the mixer and cut down on drips. And, of course, the attachment set contains all the basic tools you'll need.

This collection is really for those of us who don't require a full-service, heavy duty stand mixer like the classic KitchenAid version. This choice is lighter, less expensive, and capable enough for the moderate duties most kitchens will call upon it to perform.

For a cake with icing, separate premix of wet and dry ingredients, double batches, breads or cookies where the recipe is split and different flavorings added... you need an extra bowl to get the job done. Why not choose one which will fit your mixer?

Improvements on the bowl design include a flat bottom to help it sit more solidly on the counter and a well-sized handle for those times when a heavy bowl or wet, slippery hands make maneuvering difficult. If something needs a quick chill, I can pop it right into the refrigerator or freezer. Let your bread rise right in the original bowl and keep yourself from overhandling the dough.

I've tried using a single mixing bowl, only to find each time that the items I need to mix are the ones in the regular bowl. By the time I transfer them, I have made a larger mess, dirtied another bowl, and left ingredients behind each step of the way. With one of these bowls, it works both with the mixer and independently. You won't have to stop midway through and wash your mixing bowl.

You can use your Kitchenaid Stand Mixer as a food processor, to knead bread, to open cans, to mix cake batter.

The possibilities are seemingly limitless. The Kitchenaid Stand Mixer is the wonder machine of the kitchen -- if, and this is a big if, you have all the right parts.

By right parts, I mean the appropriate attachment for the product. The ravioli maker, the can opener, the pasta sheet roller, etc...

The Food Grinder attachment -- one of the many attachments -- fits all Kitchenaid Stand Mixers. (All Kitchenaid attachments will fit all Kitchenaid Stand Mixers). The Food Grinder attachment includes coarse and fine plates for grinding meats, firm fruits, and vegetables. It also comes with a stomper to help push those last bits of food through the plates.

There's a myriad of possible uses for this attachment. Just looking at meat, for example, there's many ways you could go: ground turkey, meatloaf, home-made sausage, salmon burgers. Or you could go the veggie route and try using it to make hummus.

Having the attachment opens up a new world of possibilities.

Now, if Kitchenaid could come up with an attachment that would wash the dishes for me, I'd be set.

And the one thing that will increase its usefulness more than anything else is an extra bowl.

There are many recipes that call for mixing ingredients separately before blending, and having to transfer them to and from the lone mixing bowl is not only inconvenient, it can prove disastrous to delicate recipes. Egg whites in particular don't like being moved about too much, the point of mixing being to inject air into the food. Every time you spoon or pour fragile mixtures like that, you lose the volume you just mixed in. The other reason you may want an extra bowl on hand would be for a backup; just think if you had a big baking weekend ahead and your mixing bowl proved defective at the last minute and snapped its anchor rings? Sure, you could contact the company and have the bowl replaced, but that wouldn't happen in time for your baking deadline.

This stainless steel bowl is built to the heavy duty specifications of all the original Kitchenaid components. It has a solid handle riveted onto the side and the mounting holes to fix it into the fittings on the mixer. It is in fact heavier than the standard bowl that comes with the stand mixer; those that use the commercial version will recognize this as the bowl that accompanies their model.

But will the Sunbeam still be around for you grandkids to use?

My main reservation stems from the fact that it has limited versatility. The attachments Cuisinart offers for its mixers truly add value and extend the usefulness of the machine, but they only work on Cuisinart stand mixers (four of those models).

The reason to own a powered juicer of this type is so that you don't have to manually work the fruit across the reamer. With the power of the mixer behind it, and the sixteen ounces the pitcher can contain, there is the potential to very quickly make a decently sized batch of juice. If I didn't make fresh juice daily or in quantity, I'd be tempted to choose another way, concerned that if I changed models or brands, this juicer would no longer be functional.

One advantage of having a juicer powered by your stand mixer is to save the space and hassle of owning and storing another appliance, but the attachment itself is the size of many electric reamers. I believe it would be better to go with a stand alone option or manual reamer rather than this particular product. Other juicers offer many extra features, such as measure markings, double strainers, funky shapes and colors. High or low tech, they are nearly all more compact and inexpensive than this single attachment.

If you don't have a stand mixer, this electric citrus juicer works just as well.

The beater blade meets every one of the basic criteria I look for in an effective product: it is fast, it cleans easily, it saves work, and it fits a number of brands and models, so I don't have to buy another blade if I decide to trade in my old mixer.

This item has won acclaim from a number of design and cooking professionals. Rubber wings constantly scrape the mixing bowl as the blade is in motion, eliminating the need to stop, scrape by hand, and restart. Not only that, it cuts mixing time in half. Just about the only thing it isn't made for is thicker dough like bread or an exceptionally heavy cookie batter, though there are some who say it works for them.

The blade cleans in the dishwasher. That alone is an improvement, as some model mixers have a standard beater which can only be hand washed. It is also made in the USA, which becomes a greater point in its favor almost day by day as the news features stories of dangerous imported products and our own economy struggles, needing all the support it can get.

The user guide has excellent, helpful tips on food preparation and baking. It is worth a read. The whole machine seems to be well designed, providing ease of use and a number of very nice options.
