Cookie Jars in Ceramic & Glass
Cookie jars truly do come in all shapes and sizes. No matter what design you can picture in your mind, there’s probably a cookie jar that matches what you’ve imagined — everything from sleek, modern stainless steel jars to a piano-playing Elvis that belts out a tune whenever it’s opened.
Tips for Cookie Jar Shopping
Ask yourself: will the jar be used mostly for cookies, or will it likely hold multiple types of food storage as you see fit? If a basic approach will work best, search for a single jar or an unlabeled canister set. This way, you can do whatever you want with them. Store cookies, sugar, flour, pasta, or grains inside so they’ll be ready whenever you need a scoop or two for a recipe.
Do you have kids at home that’ll try to sneak their hands in the cookie jars when you’re not looking? Then search for a jar, or jar set, with lids that are hard to open. Some good terms to start your search are “locking lids” or “gasket.”
There aren’t many health concerns surrounding cookie storage, since most jars are made out of glass or ceramics (no plastic BPA to worry about here), but you will want to watch out for antique jars that may have been made with lead-based paint.
Before buying, examine the seal and make sure the lid fits snugly around the jar. It may look cute in the photo, but every jar serves a purpose beyond just sitting on the kitchen counter to look cute. A well-fitting lid will keep cookies fresher longer and keep unwanted things like dust and flies out, too.
Cookie Jar Collecting
There are hundreds of resources out there dedicated to perfecting the art of cookie jar collecting. Antique and vintage cookie jars can be a very worthwhile investment — brand names like McCoy and Hull are popular choices — but there are a lot of fakes out there, too. That’s why, if this is an area that piques your interest, it’s important to have some trustworthy guides to help you navigate the waters. Here are a few links to get you started.
Apothecary jars can also serve as cookie containers, and they’re rich with history as well. They date back to when people visited apothecary shops when they were ill (instead of a Walgreen’s drugstore chain), going back as far back as the Middle Ages. At the apothecary, chemists would store their ingredients in medicinal jars to keep them safe and organized. Modern replicas are widely manufactured, like this set from Terra Kitchen.
