Chef Heston Blumenthal To Reform Hospital Cuisine

Posted by on Jun 9

heston-blumenthal-nhs-hospital-foodLess than six months after the unsettling gastroenteritis scare at his Fat Duck restaurant, celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal is tackling another aspect of England's health care industry: hospital food.

Today, Blumenthal revealed that he aims to reform the taste and nutrition of meals served at hospitals across the entire United Kingdom -- a similar campaign to Chef Jamie Oliver revamping the school lunch system.

He said he will be partnering with the NHS (or the UK's National Health Service) as well as Reading University, and in fact has been doing so for over a year. But Blumenthal has now brought this to the public's attention, making it a topic of interest during his speech at the Cheltenham Science Festival in Gloucester. He wants to "excite older people with food again."

NHS hospital food provision has come under numerous attacks, and has even seen previous reform attempts from other celebrity chefs such as Lloyd Grossman from "Masterchef." But this time, Blumenthal is confident that changes can be made. He is currently looking at ways to breathe new life into the hospital dining environment as well as providing nutritious, enjoyable food for NHS patients.

Chef Heston Blumenthal is one of only three chefs in his country to earn a Michelin star, and is the owner of The Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, the only restaurant to earn a perfect score of 10 in the 2009 Good Food Guide.
