Two words could effectively describe the newest cooking gadgets released during the spring of 2009: colorful silicone.
The use of silicone alone is a convenient addition to just about any piece of cookware. Silicone is extremely flexible and doesn't lose its structural integrity in the oven, microwave, dishwasher, or freezer.
But colorful? That's right -- citrus-themed colors such as tangerine, cherry, and lime won't be disappearing from stores anytime soon. Although marketers say the colorful trend is partly to do with making products kid-friendly.
For example, several of the silicone products released are geared towards helping both parents and children feel safer in the kitchen. Sur La Table's latest silicone collection includes a "family" of kitchen tools -- meaning that the set's measuring cups, spoons, pastry brush, and spatula (pictured here) all feature a humanoid body with arms, legs, and even a belly button. The product line is named "Head Chef."
Additional Sur La Table products feature colorful silicone for adults, such as a new rainbow-coated whisk. Several of their other collections have included citrus color combinations for quite some time.
Even Chef Mario Batali's product lines are implementing this trend as well with lime-tinted silicone handles, cherry-red handle grips, and orange citrus juicers. His silicone collection can be found at Crate & Barrel.
Other companies onthis season's trend bandwagon include Williams-Sonoma, Boston Warehouse, and Pylones.
