In less than a month, California's Monterey Bay area will host celebrity chef Alton Brown from TV's The Food Network in the 8th annual "Cooking For Solutions," a seafood-themed weekend event focusing o nsustainable seafood and winemaking.
The term "sustainable seafood" is a fairly new buzzword in the past decade or so, but the practice has been around for much longer. It refers to chefs and restaurants choosing environmental sources that can maintain or increase production in the future without hurting the seafood species' environment, such as farming or not overfishing a creature's habitat.
Other well-known food experts scheduled to appear at the event are Hawaii's culinary ambassador Sam Choy, Napa Valley's Thomas Keller of The French Laundry, author and pastry chef Jim Dodge, and Floyd Cardoz of Tabla in New York.
Visitors will be able to participate in chef cooking demonstrations, tour various sustainable seafood farms and restaurants, and learn about gourmet winemaking. A silent auction will be featured during the evening Gala. Four chefs at the event will also host a cooking challenge where they will be required to use sustainable seafood species in their recipes.
Those interested in helping support seafood sustainability can do so by purchasing a ticket to the event, and participating in the Gala's silent auction. The event will be held at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, May 15-16.
