This Friday marks the start of the 10-day Taste of Chicago, the largest culinary festival in the world.
It is the festival's 29th anniversary this year. In 1980, the very first Taste of Chicago was a one-day event. But just one year later, the festival gained popularity by stretching over a ten-day course of events, and remains that way to this day.
The beauty of Chicago as a city alone is in its ethnic diversity with an emphasis on the arts. Likewise, guests should expect the same themes when attending the event. Over 54 local restaurants will be present at this year's culinary extravaganza, offering various fares from Italy, Vietnam, Poland, New Orleans, and Africa (to name a few).
One can expect to pay $1 to $2 for a sampling of Middle Eastern samosas, cheese empanadas, Irish egg rolls, or even "popcorn-cicles" -- a snack made with flash-frozen popcorn. And of course, save room for Chicago-style pizza.
The headlining event at the 2009 Taste of Chicago is a cooking demonstration by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, who will be on hand to sign copies of his latest cookbook "Emeril At the Grill." Other TV and media personalities are scheduled to appear as well.
