This uniquely styled set of Furi knives from Australia, designed to meet the exacting specifications of Chef Rachael Ray, will be most popular with fans of the show. Many of the new features are as stylish as they are practical.
The orange handles (Chef Ray's favorite color, of course) are contrived from a solid core of polypropylene, impregnated with an anti-microbial agent and covered with a layer of softer synthetic rubber. The rubberized grip and the finger notch shape ensure a non slip hold even when wet.
Blades in this set are more slender than some patterns, but remain strong due to forged bolsters and full rat tail tangs. The 8 piece set does include a Santoku with the familiar hollow grind and knuckle saving dropped blade, as well as a carving fork and filet knife which aren't commonly found in basic prep sets. Chef Ray's fans will understand and appreciate her choices.
The birchwood knife block itself is pretty but a bit too small, with a narrow profile that will fit well in smaller kitchens but may be a little unstable. To at least partly counter that instability the manufacturer did not equip the block with feet, so you'll have to find a spot that's high and dry. Our counter doesn't qualify.
Designed for efficiency, comfort and even balance, the knives are fitted with stainless steel end caps that counter the weight of the blades. Sharpening is easily accomplished with an ordinary sharpening steel. The set is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
