goodbye gourmetOne of the biggest shocks to confront the culinary world in quite some time has hit the press today, and if you haven't already heard it by now, brace yourself for impact: Gourmet Magazine is calling it quits.

Conde Nast Publications announced to its Gourmet employees today that they were shutting down all operations, along with magazines Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and Cookie. Interestingly, Gourmet's sister mag, Bon Appetit, has survived the meltdown.

But the fact remains that the food industry's leading periodical is now among the mighty who have fallen to the changes in journalism and communication media -- even with its hugely popular website Epicurious helping Gourmet keep up with the times.

"The transition from hard paper to the Internet is not as easy as it should be," celebrity chef Bobby Flay commented earlier. "We just take it as a sign of the way things are going to be now."

Overall, a sense of shock is purveying the thoughts and comments of those close to Gourmet. Food travelogue guru Anthony Bourdain, who got his start as a writer for the magazine, says it's like "a major planet that's just disappearing... it's the center of gravity."

The loss may hit home the hardest for celebrated writer and critic Ruth Reichl, a former writer for the New York Times who took the helm in leading Gourmet into the 21st century, winning several awards in the process.

Amidst the devastating news, however, Ruth is grateful for the encouragement that she and her colleagues have received. Today via Twitter, she announced, "Thank you all SO much for this outpouring of support. It means a lot. Sorry not to be posting now, but I'm packing. We're all stunned, sad."

According to Conde Nast, the remnants that will still continue on from Gourmet Magazine's 68-year legacy include TV franchises, book publishing, and its recipe collection on Epicurious.
