Jose Andres Named JBF Outstanding Chef

On the eve of May 9, the 2011 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards took place in New York's Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center. The theme of "The Ultimate Melting Pot" was hosted by celebrity chef and restaurateur Tom Colicchio, Ming Tsai of Simply Ming, and San Francisco award-winning chef Traci Des Jardins.

Winner of the 2011 Outstanding Chef Award is Jose Andres, a Spanish chef credited for introducing American diners to the small plates concept. He owns several acclaimed restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area including minibar, Jaleo, and Zaytinya.

The Rising Star Chef of the Year is Gabriel Rucker, chef at Le Pigeon in Portland, OR. This was Rucker's fourth nomination, and he was presented with the Rising Star award during his last year of eligibility.

This year's Best New Restaurant is ABC Kitchen in New York City. It is helmed by French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten of the award-winning Jean Georges at the Trump International Hotel & Tower.

Eleven Madison Park, a NYC restaurant known for its gourmet custom-creations menu, received the award for Outstanding Restaurant under the direction of executive chef Daniel Humm and pastry chef Angela Pinkerton, winner of this year's Outstanding Pastry Chef award.

The Outstanding Restaurateur Award went to Richard Melman of Chicago's Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, owner of 31 restaurants that include Maggiano's Little Italy, M Street Kitchen, and El Segundo Sol.

Julian P. Van Winkle, III of the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery was awarded the Outstanding Wine & Spirits Professional Award. Based in Louisville, KY, the distillery currently boasts the top-rated bourbon whiskey in the world.

In the food service categories, the Outstanding Restaurant Service Award was given to Per Se, an urban re-creation of The French Laundry in New York City owned by head chef Thomas Keller and Laura Cunningham. The Outstanding Wine Service Award went to a New York City establishment as well: The Modern, directed by Belinda Chang.

The James Beard Foundation Best Chefs in America Awards were presented by region:

  • Great Lakes -- Alex Young of Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor, MI
  • Mid-Atlantic -- Michael Solomonov of Zahav in Philadelphia, PA
  • Midwest -- Isaac Becker of 112 Eatery in Minneapolis, MN
  • New York City -- Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune in the East Village
  • Northeast -- Tony Maws of Craigie On Main in Cambridge, MA
  • Northwest -- Andy Ricker of Pok Pok in Portland, OR
  • Pacific -- Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco
  • South -- Stephen Stryjewski of Cochon in New Orleans
  • Southeast -- Andrea Reusing of Lantern in Chapel Hill, NC
  • Southwest -- Tie between Saipin Chutima of Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, NV and Tyson Cole of Uchi in Austin, TX. This is the eighth time in James Beard history that a tie has been awarded.
