julie julia movie reviewWhen I posted the link to the highly-anticipated "Julie & Julia" trailer, I knew from watching it that the full length of the film would be just as entertaining when it released. Fortunately, the critics seem to agree with me (for once).

The movie is directed by Nora Ephron and stars Meryl Streep as beloved French chef Julia Child. Amy Adams plays the role of Julie Powell, a blogger who discovered a new love for cooking through Julia Child's recipes.  The film is based on a true story, previously recounted in Julie Powell's 2005 book "Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously" as well as Julia Child's memoir "My Life In France."

Those who are expecting a happy-go-lucky, feel-good experience throughout the entire movie may be a bit disappointed, however.  Ephron pointedly uses cultural and political conflicts throughout the story, and doesn't downplay the "nastier side of the female psyche."

But it still provides enough comic relief to keep the entertainment rolling, and the end result will definitely leave viewers with a renewed passion for all things food-related.  Critics are already hailing Meryl Streep's performance as "Oscar-worthy," and are anticipating this opening weekend to be quite a success.  I can't see how they'd be wrong.

"Julie & Julia" officially opens in theaters across the country on Friday, August 7, 2009.
