From Kuhn Rikon of Switzerland comes a flashy but functional new design in paring knives. Many customers are pleased, and if what you want is an inexpensive knife in striking nonstick colors, you will be pleased as well. There are a few things to consider first.
These 8" paring knives with 4" high carbon steel blades come with handles sturdy enough for ordinary kitchen work, but without the ergonomic features you can get in higher quality products. The thin blades cut well, and the colorful coatings (blades match the handles) are non stick. That also eases the work load.
Someday you'll have to sharpen these beauties, and that's the bad news. With every sharpening you'll lose some of that protective coating. If you want these knives to last you should do everything possible to care for that colorful layer, especially since this is the main reason most people like them. They certainly won't get lost in a drawer.
To extend the lifetime of the blade coating, the company provides a colorful matching blade sheath to limit the damage they will incur in storage. The plastic sheaths are well vented, so they won't trap moisture that could accelerate deterioration of the "high carbon" (not stainless steel) blades. Hand washing is advisable.
