Marco Pierre White Named Guest Chef For Jamaica Observer Food Awards

Jamaica's most prestigious culinary event is set to take place on July 22 during the 12th Annual Observer Food Awards. This event brings several surrounding island communities together for a night of gourmet Caribbean fare.

Guest Chef for this year's ceremonies is Marco Pierre White, a renowned chef credited with changing and modernizing the perceptions of British cooking. His mentored students include Eric Chavot, Mario Batali, Heston Blumenthal, and Gordon Ramsay. He is still the only British chef to have received three Michelin stars when he was merely 33 years old.

Three years ago, White visited Jamaica to experience the island's cuisine, and found his experience "inspiring and exciting," he says. He was enthralled by the bounty of Jamaican produce and by the potency of its cuisine. He left acknowledging, "I am Jamaica's number one fan in the world."

"Jamaica brings out the best in me. There's a special kind of spirituality, and that's what I want to see in the food here -- Jamaican, sophisticated, but humble and intelligent. I hate the snobbery of food -- and particularly food that's overworked. Chefs are insecure and paint pictures on huge plates to hide their lack of technical ability. They're doing it for themselves, not for their guests. If you force things in life, they break. Allow people to simply enjoy their meal."

The Jamaica Observer Food Awards will take place on East Lawns of Devon House, July 22, 2010.
