What started out as a humorous talk show bit on an Ontario radio station has quickly become an Internet sensation, and is now merging its way into household culture: "National Men Make Dinner Day."
This "holiday" is celebrated on the first Thursday of every November --yep, that's today! -- and aims to get guys cooking in the kitchen for their loved ones rather than plunking down on the couch to watch the game, for example, especially now that they can't be watching any more of the World Series, so that excuse is moot at least! Eligible participants in this holiday extravaganza must be male, have a willingness to have fun learning something new, and not be a regular or semi-regular home cook to begin with.
"Men Make Dinner Day" even comes with its own set of rules, such as "The main meal must include minimum of 4 ingredients and require at least one cooking utensil other than a fork, " and "Barbeques are not allowed. Since the discovery of fire, men have laid claim to cooking over open flame. The challenge of working a typical kitchen is far greater and considered a more unfamiliar environment."
So why would any husband, boyfriend, or father put themselves through the rigmarole of this occasion? The holiday's official website offers a few reasons:
- Whoever is cooking always gets the most attention from the dog.
- Several recipes include beer as a legitimate ingredient.
- Some desserts, such as creme brulee, require the use of a propane torch. How much fun is that?!
The site lists several additional rules, reasons, and ideas to get started -- taken with a grain of salt, of course. For other recipe ideas, browse our handy selection here and get to it!
