Recap: “Top Chef Masters” Series Premiere

top-chef-masters-ep-1On Wednesday night, the spinoff series to the Bravo network's popular show "Top Chef" featured four excited chefs, three new Critics, two difficult cooking challenges, and one new hostess to walk us through it all.

The four chefs competing in the first round of elimination tonight were Hubert Keller of Fleur De Lys in San Francisco, Christopher Lee of Aureole in New York City, Michael Schlow of Radius in Boston, and Tim Love of The Lonesome Dove in Fort Worth. All four chefs have garnered renown and expertise in their field, both nationally and globally, and have collectively earned everything from Michelin stars to James Beard awards during their careers.

The judging system for this series has been completely revamped, with four new chefs competing each week to earn a spot on Season 1's final episodes. In fact, the judges are actually the "Critics," made up of "New York Magazine" food critic Gael Greene, British critic and novelist Jay Rayner, and editor-in-chief of "Saveur" magazine James Oseland. New hostess and model Kelly Choi, a former host for the James Beard Awards, joins the cast as well.

Episode 1 brought two surprisingly difficult cooking challenges to the set. During the quickfire challenge, each chef was required to craft a dessert to impress another panel of critics: Girl Scouts. And the elimination challenge restricted each chef to cook a three-course meal with a microwave and a hot plate in the confines of a college dorm room.

Chef Hubert Keller won both challenges with a chocolate swan and mouse dessert, seafood carpaccio, cinnamon vegetable soup, and macaroni & cheese with prawns (the final dish having been prepared using a dorm room shower, of all things.)

"Top Chef Masters" airs on the Bravo network Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET. Reruns air Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
