When I first saw SmartShopper's Grocery List Organizer, the gadget-girl in me went, "Cool. I want one of those." I love making lists, too, so I was especially jazzed by the Grocery List Organizer.
Then, the little angel on my left shoulder, the one touting a green halo and recycled wings, cleared her throat. "Ahem. Is this thing really necessary? What's wrong with the paper scraps you keep in that broken planting pot right next to the pens that are in the old silverware drainer?"
Well, the scraps of paper work all right. Except when I lose them. Or when there's six spread across the kitchen counter from the last two weeks of grocery trips. Plus, paper doesn't have state-of-the-art voice recognition technology which the Grocery List Organizer does.
It's easy to use, too. All you have to do is press a button, say what you need (toilet paper, milk, pecans), and the machine records it for you. You can even record errands you need to do. Then, before you head out the door, you can print the list (which the Organizer has alphabetized for you). The errands will be at the top, and the food items separated into categories will follow.
The thermal printer doesn't require ink and the Organizer comes with three rolls of thermal paper. All you need to do is add the four AA batteries, and the listing can begin.
So, as you weigh the pros and cons (technology vs. nature), consider one more thing. If you cannot rationalize this purchase for yourself, it would make a great gift for someone who has trouble writing, such as someone with arthritis. And, if you're lucky, maybe they'll let you play with it, especially if you promise to drive them to the grocery store.
