Today, celebrity chef and spokesman Spike Mendelsohn for P&G's Dawn Professional announced the start of the "Make Your Restaurant Shine" contest, and it essentially boils down to two words: Kitchen Makeover.
After last year's restaurant industry decline (which was the worst since 1981), Dawn executives realized that something needed to be done. P&G director Eric Hetrick said that they "saw an opportunity to give back to the community by helping restaurants emerge from the recession stronger than ever."
The pros at Dawn are focusing on the technical aspects of restaurants, not just the cooking or waitstaff employees. That's why Mendelsohn is on board. He began his culinary career as a dishwasher in his family's restaurant, so he appreciates the value of a kitchen setup that's built to high-quality standards. He is most commonly recognized as a season 4 contestant on Bravo's "Top Chef," and is currently doing well at his "Good Stuff Eatery" in Washington, D.C., a nostalgic burgers & shakes joint where every menu item is made-to-order by hand.
Restaurant owners are encouraged to apply for the “Make Your Restaurant Shine” contest at www.DawnCelebrations.com. The winner will receive one heck of a prize package: a check for $20,000 towards restaurant improvements, a trip to the 2010 National Restaurant Association show in Chicago filled with networking and seminars, and a custom consult with Spike Mendelsohn himself about the direction the restaurant industry is going and how to best put the $20,000 to use.
Mendelsohn is really looking forward to stepping into this mentoring role. “As I get ready to open my second restaurant, I am again going through the process of vetting and securing only the best partners and resources," he said when the contest was announced. "I’m looking forward to working with the brand to share the expertise I’ve gained with restaurateurs looking to establish themselves, build a reputation for their food, and grow their business.”
