On April 11, Food Network Canada experienced a record-breaking number of viewers who all tuned in to watch the series premiere of "Top Chef Canada."

Nearly 317,000 viewers watched Monday's Season 1 episode, making it the highest-rated show ever to air on Food Network Canada to date.

The format is very similar to the American version of the Emmy-winning reality show. Sixteen chefs will compete each week in a series of quickfire and elimination challenges until one is left standing. The winner will receive a $100,000 grand prize as well as a GE-monogrammed kitchen worth over $30,000.

Judges on "Top Chef Canada" include Toronto celebrity chef and restaurateur Mark McEwan, "Entertainment Tonight" host Thea Andrews, and restaurateur Shereen Arazm, creator and owner of Hollywood's Geisha House and Terroni. McEwan serves as the head judge, a position held by Tom Colicchio on the U.S. version of "Top Chef."

The series will also feature special guest judges during each episode. Vancouver chef Vikram Vij, known for his Indian fusion cuisine, appeared during the premiere. The Art Gallery of Ontario's executive chef Anne Yarymowich will also serve as a guest judge in an upcoming episode. Additional guest judges have yet to be announced.

"Top Chef Canada" airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. and repeats on Saturday nights at 7 p.m. on Food Network Canada.
