appliance-design-competition-09-vcs-grills"Appliance Design" magazine has revealed the winners of its 22nd Annual Excellence in Design competition. Categories include business machines, electronics, medical equipment, and both major and small appliances.

The KitchenAid Architect Series II Gas Cooktop is a bronze winner due to its high culinary standards of performance and design. Its 20,000 BTU burner is professional grade, and responds with a glass-touch display which features heat indicators as well as a safety lockdown if the surface gets dangerous.

Other bronze winners include the Zojirushi Electric Kettle and the LG French Door Refrigerator.

Silver recognition went to the Electrolux Double Wall Oven and the Jura Capresso ENA 5 Automatic Coffee Center. Featured on QVC as well as many other well-known retailers, the Jura Capresso Coffee Center has a forward-thinking design. Its stainless steel ThermoBlock system, as well as its Smart Zero Energy setting, allow the appliance to use a progressively "green" approach to making coffee.

The only gold-medal winner of the 2009 Excellence in Design Competition in a culinary category is the Vision Grills VCS 2, pictured above. This barbeque grill is built with multiple surfaces that swing out from the heat source as needed. It has a very compact, vertical design, which means that several layers of food can be grilled at once.

Each appliance entry was judged in the following four areas: aesthetics, human factors, innovation, and technical merits. Additional information about the award recipients can be found on the "Appliance Design" official website.
