chez-panisse-foundationIf your artistic talents extend beyond the kitchen into the field of graphic design, take a look at the most recent Social Designer competition.

Entrants must choose a local food specific to their region, and then design a brand to be featured on a tote bag. The food can be a fruit or vegetable, or even a local culinary item that is famed for bringing tourists to your hometown.

A portion of the proceeds from this competition will go to benefit Chef Alice Water's charity: the Chez Panisse Foundation. The charity works closely with local governments and school systems in order to teach children about healthy food traditions. One such example is the Edible Schoolyard program, a one-acre garden and classroom at MLK Jr. Middle School in Berkeley which students tend, harvest, and prepare under instructional supervision.

Social Designer will be judging the competition, and entrants are enouraged to submit designs that have "positive imagery with original, contemporary, graphically appealing designs." The winner will have their original graphic artwork manufactured for sale on the Social Designer website, available for tote bags and T-shirts.

The deadline for submission is May 25, 2009.
