art & soul of bakingIs it just me, or do lists like these seem to go the way of the auto industry sometimes?  The full year isn't even up, and already Food & Wine Magazine has submitted their list of the Top 25 cookbooks published for 2009.

But it's quite an impressive list, nonetheless. I've listed the top three winners below:

Coming in third on the list is Frank Stitt's “Bottega Favorita.” Its subtitle is fairly self-explanatory for the culinary genre you'd expect: "A Southern Chef's Love Affair With Italian Food."  Stitt is a well-known Southern chef and traveled to Italy to gather inspiration for what is now his first best-selling publication.

Earning second-place status is “Secrets of the Red Lantern: Stories and Vietnamese Recipes from the Heart” by Pauline Nguyen. The innovation of this book combines a novel-esque biography with authentic recipes featured throughout. It takes the reader on a journey through Vietnamese culture, and leaves quite a powerful lasting impression (which might not live up to the expectations of those who crave a happy ending).

Finally, Food & Wine's favorite cookbook this year is “The Art and Soul of Baking” by Cindy Mushet. It's a collaborative effort with French cookware elitists Sur La Table, and presents a comprehensive gourmet guide on everything related to carbohydrates. Sections on pantry ingredients, kitchen tools, and baking tips all receive plenty of room throughout the book. Mushet's work is recommended for intermediate pastry chefs, although some savvy beginners may glean a lot from the book as well.

Quite a few big-name celebrity chefs made the Top 25 list -- Giada De Laurentiis, Bobby Flay, Mario Batali, and Joel Robuchon to name a few.

Also, if you'd rather save some dough (no pun intended) and not purchase every cookbook on the list, Food & Wine will be releasing Volume 12 of their "Best of the Best Cookbook Recipes" soon.  It's a collection of their favorite recipes from the Top 25 list, and will be available for purchase on October 6, 2009.
