jamesbeard blacknwhite logoIt's time once again to start up the James Beard Awards process for 2010. If you've never been a part of the nomination process, now may be a good opportunity to test your skills while you still have time to do so.  Registration for nominations and voting on the JBA site is free, and does not require Foundation membership.

Anyone can submit the name of a chef/restaurateur that they feel should receive a James Beard nod. However, the Awards rules mention that you should only nominate one person per category -- and there are 19 categories. For example, if you're a super-skilled chef in multiple cuisines, don't go nominating yourself for the whole lot. Pick your best option, and see what happens.

Also, if you've already received a James Beard Award in a certain category, you're not eligible to receive an award in that same category for another 4 years. Or, as the official rules state it, "Previous award winners from 2005 to 2009 may not be candidates again in the same category, though they may be eligible in other categories." This means awards in other specialties are still an option.

The official nominations for a James Beard Award are then chosen from a select group of previous winners as well as respected food & wine critics from around the nation.

Those who wish to submit a nomination can do so through December 31, 2009. After that, semifinalists will be notified in mid-February, and the contenders will be announced on March 22, 2010. Winners will then be announced on May 3.
