the next iron chef logoOnly one week left until the season premiere of Food Network's "The Next Iron Chef" --  and, like the initial season last year, this one's shaping up to be just as exciting and unpredictable as ever.

Ten contestants have been chosen to compete in this year's battle, including one chef each from the cities of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Kirkland, five chefs from the culinary-prestigious New York, and one contestant all the way from Puerto Rico.

Each chef is asked to present the best meal possible from a list of insane ingredients. This year, look for unhatched chicken eggs (with fallopian tubes still attached), stinky tofu, chicken feet, and duck tongue, among other commonly-avoided proteins.

Hosting the show again is "Good Eats" foodmeister Alton Brown, paired with judges Donatella Arpaia, Jeffrey Steingarten, and Anya Fernald. Restaurateur Arpaia is the only returning judge this year. Last year's judges Michael Ruhlman and Andrew Knowlton are now replaced by Steingarten (the food critic for Vogue) and Fernald (an expert in sustainable food and living).

And the prize? The winning chef in this series gets a coveted spot on the Chairman's team of "Iron Chef America," and will be able to call celebrity chefs Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, Michael Symon, and Masaharu Morimoto their contemporaries. What an honor, right?

"The Next Iron Chef" premieres Sunday, October 4, at 9:00 p.m. ET on the Food Network.
