james-beard-win-09-dan-barberAny restaurant owner in New York knows that they are competing among the best of the best every day for their patrons' business. But yesterday evening at the 2009 James Beard Foundation Awards, New York-based chefs and restaurants took it a step further by sweeping their competition on a national level, taking home the most awards for their state.

Winning the coveted "Chef of the Year" award was Dan Barber, owner of two Blue Hill restaurants in upstate New York and New York City. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of the "farm-to-table" movement, in which restaurants serve seasonal produce and meat raised by local farmers.

The 2009 "Outstanding Restaurant of the Year" award went to Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, already well known for receiving three Michelin stars for his Manhattan restaurant Jean Georges located in the prestigious Trump Tower.

In ironic news, the James Beard awards took special time to celebrate "Women In Food." However, only one female chef walked away with a top award last night: Chef Gina DePalma as "Top Pastry Chef," originating from Babbo Restaurant in -- you guessed it -- New York City.

You can find the complete list of winners on the official James Beard Foundation website. But for now, hats off to New York chefs for another impressive year in culinary feats!
