wolfgang-puck-to-create-food-domainToday, renowned chef Wolfgang Puck announced his partnership with Minds + Machines to create .FOOD, a brand new Internet domain tag.

Gone are the days of the generic, "dot-com" World Wide Web. While .com is still the most widely used domain, other domains have reached household-name status such as .edu, .org, and .net. Countries have been given specific domains as well.

Wolfgang Puck reasoned that by creating the new top-level domain .FOOD, restaurants and food product companies would be able to "stand out from the crowd" on the Internet. He said it's like "opening a business on the best street in any city in the world."

At today's ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) meeting in Sydney, Australia, Wolfgang Puck said that a percentage of funds received by the new .FOOD domain will benefit culinary-themed charities like Meals on Wheels and provide scholarships for Culinary Institute of America students.

Minds + Machines CEO Antony Van Couvering spoke at a news conference following the press release, stating that he and his company are thrilled that Wolfgang Puck is adding his experience and insight to the project. He believes that Puck will be a powerful spokesperson for the .FOOD domain.

This is the beginning of a new venture for Minds + Machines. Starting in 2010, the company will approve additional domains for cities, businesses, and earth-friendly concepts (such as .ECO, which is sponsored by former Vice President Al Gore.)
